When news of the novel corona virus that began in Wuhan, China first broke, the Internet was rippling with speculation that the virus, now called SARS-CoV-2, was a biological weapon that had escaped from a lab.
The speculation was fueled by the fact that Wuhan is home to a Level-4 biological lab and another lab run by the Wuhan Center for Disease Control.
It was also helped along by a study that has since been withdrawn that suggested the virus’ genome had snippets of HIV genetic material present.
Now, it’s unlikely that the labs were working on weaponizing the corona virus. As a biological weapon, COVID-19 doesn’t make much sense. The blowback is simply too pernicious.
That doesn’t mean, however, that the virus was not born in a lab studying vaccines for corona viruses.
In fact, there is mounting evidence that a lab is the source of the virus, as investigative reporter Jim Geraghty shows in his must read article published in the National Review.
Now, the speculation could be ended if Chinese authorities were forthcoming. But the Chinese Communist Party has done everything in its power to stymie an investigation into the origins of the virus.
Where, for example, is Patient Zero?
Patient Zero is the person who contracted the COVID virus from an animal carrying the virus.
Initial research showed the virus to be closely related to corona virus carried by bats and it was believed that the so-called wet markets in Wuhan – which are a few hundred meters from one of the labs – were the source of the infection.
Here’s the thing, though. No bats were on sale at the market. The bat corona virus is from a species of bat that lives hundreds of kilometers away.
So where and when did the virus jump from animal to human?
So where is Patient Zero?
Geraghty discusses one possibility – a graduate student who worked at the lab and has since disappeared.
None of this is idle curiosity. China must be held to account for its role in enabling the spread of this deadly virus which claimed thousands of lives and shut down our economies.
If this virus was indeed born in a lab and escaped by infecting a worker and China covered up the accident, then China is liable for trillions of dollars in damage.
