Just as China’s Communist Party lifts travel bans to and from Wuhan, the epicenter of the corona virus that is decimating the world, come reports that thousands remain infected and that fully 35 per cent of those infected are asymptomatic.
In other words, China is about to undergo a massive second wave of infections and that infected people will be traveling within China and abroad.
According to the South China Morning Post, more than two-thirds of corona virus cases reported in mainland China in the past eight days were people who showed no symptoms of the disease.
Scientists looking at the data, however, say that the samples are too small to draw any hard and fast conclusions.
Leo Poon Lit-man, the head of the public health laboratory sciences division at the University of Hong Kong says, “We don’t know what these figures mean without having the same data for the past three months.”
Here we go again.
As I’ve stressed over and over again, if we wait to for sufficient data to draw hard conclusions, we will be behind the eight ball. Once there is sufficient data, it is too late. The virus is in the community and an outbreak has begun.
That is the lesson we should have learned from both the SARS outbreak and from the current pandemic.
China is desperate to restart its economy. The shutdown of Wuhan, a city of 11 million and the heart of Chinese manufacturing, has cost the country dearly.
The trouble is that the disease is re-establishing itself. And now with tens of thousands of Wuhan residents and others trapped in the city leaving it for other cities in China and the world, the dreaded second wave is being unleashed.
Chinese authorities, to be sure, are monitoring people leaving the city and taking the temperature and looking for symptoms, but that’s next to useless.
The Wuhan virus leaves many carriers asymptomatic.
So the virus will and has already spread to other cities. Netizens are reporting hotspots across the country and panic buying is growing by leaps and bounds.
Frankly, China needs to be quarantined until this virus is gone or a vaccine is developed. That means no travel to or from.
